Resumen: The works of the historians of the Indies constitute a vast corpus of texts of various literary forms. This study concludes affirming that the basic function of the use of the classical myth in these authors, obviating its erudite base, is the comparative one; that the myth is a lower fable if compared with the truth seen by the historian, and that the used sources are the classic authors, handled, in the case of the Greeks, in Latin translations, and the mythological manuals in use at the time.
