Arquitecto inglés, cuya primera formación fue la de cantero y albañil. Thomas Atkinson es más conocido por sus acuarelas y libros de viajes que le encargó el zar de Rusia Nicolás I en 1848 y que le mantuvo ocupado hasta 1853. Como arquitecto es autor de la iglesia de Saint Luke en Cheetham Hill, Manchester, y del libro <i>Gothic Ornaments selected from the different Cathedrals and Churches in England</i>, publicado en 1829. Los dos primeros volúmenes de sus viajes por Rusia se titularon: <i>Oriental and Western Siberia: a Narrative of Seven Years' Explorations and Adventures in Siberia, Mongolia, the Kirghis Steppes, Chinese Tartary, and part of Central Asia. With a Map and numerous Illustrations</i> (1858) y <i> Travels in the Regions of the Upper and Lower A moor and the Russian Acquisitions on the Confines of India and China</i>(1860).
