Especially, most of his writings made him to be named (together with Carl Ritter) as one of the "fathers" of modern geography. However, Horacio Capel considers Humboldt as one of the "putative fathers", not a real "father" of geography, because posterior development of this science had not much to do with Humboldt’s concepts on this science. This paper tries to reinforce Capel’s idea on Humboldt, analyzing Humboldt’s main work on Inter-Tropical America. It would be possible to state that Humboldt was a true "father" of geography, but not of a scientific concept of this discipline. This means that, together with a concept of geography as a truly, explanative, integral and integrative science, there is a different way to see what is geography as a trivial discipline, which makes reference to exotic, rare, queer and less known details and yet, being appealing to most people. Humboldt’s main work on Inter-Tropical America (written with Bonpland) could be considered, without underestimate its many important contributions to science, a good example of the last way to define geography.
